Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) is pleased to support the transformative plans for Cardiff Central railway station, which is set to enhance Wales’ busiest transport hub.
The forthcoming planning submission marks a significant milestone in the drive to create a modern, accessible, and efficient transport gateway that will better connect the region and support future economic growth.
The scheme, led by Transport for Wales (TfW), will see a major redevelopment of Cardiff Central station, ensuring it can meet increasing passenger demand while preserving its historic character.
The planned improvements include a larger concourse, additional gate-lines to ease congestion, and enhanced accessibility features to cater to all passengers, including those with reduced mobility.
Further benefits include upgraded waiting areas, improved retail spaces, and expanded cycle storage facilities, reinforcing CCR’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions.
As a key investor in this project, Cardiff Capital Region recognises the importance of a modernised Cardiff Central station in supporting economic development, enhancing connectivity, and encouraging greater use of public transport.
The station serves as the gateway to the Core Valley Lines network, currently undergoing an extensive transformation as part of the South Wales Metro, a critical element of CCR’s long-term transport vision.
The Department for Transport, the Welsh Government, and Cardiff Capital Region will collectively provide up to £140 million for the improvements, reinforcing the commitment to delivering world-class transport infrastructure in South Wales.
The proposed changes align with the broader Metro Central vision, a strategic initiative aimed at creating an integrated transport hub in the heart of Cardiff.
Pending planning approval and full business case confirmation, enabling works are expected to commence in late 2025.
A final decision on the full business case is anticipated in autumn 2025, with the enhancements set to play a key role in delivering a more accessible, better-connected, and sustainable transport network for the Cardiff Capital Region.
