Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) has begun the engagement process with local stakeholders on its new Local Innovation Partnerships Fund (LIPF) that has been awarded by the UK Research and Innovation organisation (UKRI). The LIPF is a £500 million UK-wide programme designed to empower local ‘triple helix’ partnerships comprising of public sector, businesses, and universities to develop and scale high-potential innovation clusters.
CCR has been chosen as a delivery partner for the LIPF, which has resulted in a new fund of at least £30m from UKRI (with potential for a further £90m private investment). This targets innovation-led economic growth in the region.
CCR has just completed three initial engagement sessions in Cardiff, Ebbw Vale and Newport under the programme’s Earmarked Strand, focusing on building awareness, fostering collaborations, and guiding stakeholders through the readiness check and application processes. The events emphasised that the Fund is led by UKRI and focused on converting research excellence into commercial applications, driving economic growth, job creation, and investment in South-East Wales.
Owen Wilce, Senior Innovation Manager, Cardiff Capital Region said: “The three Local Innovation Partnerships Fund events in Cardiff, Ebbw Vale and Newport have shown just how much energy and ambition exists across our region. With more than 200 participants from local authorities, industry, academia and our communities, the level of engagement has been exceptional. The insights, challenges and opportunities shared during these sessions are directly shaping the future design of the Fund, ensuring it truly reflects the needs and priorities of the Cardiff Capital Region. We’re excited to build on this momentum as we move into the next phase of collaborative innovation.”
