CCR drives solar surge as Switch Together reopens for homes

Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) is encouraging households across South East Wales to register for the second round of Switch Together (previously known as Solar Together), the collective purchase solar scheme that has already helped more than 560 households in the region cut their energy bills, boost their energy resilience and reduce carbon emissions.

Delivered in partnership with seven local authorities – Cardiff, Torfaen, Newport, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Blaenau Gwent, Vale of Glamorgan and iChoosr, Switch Together uses the power of group buying to secure quality solar installations at a competitive price, giving residents access to trusted suppliers, transparent pricing and step by step support.

In 2025 alone, the first round of the scheme led by Cardiff Council on behalf of the region, unlocked over £3.9 million of private investment in local homes and is set to cut an estimated 365 tonnes of carbon in its first year. It’s also boosted the regional economy with all work delivered by trusted, locally vetted installers, who achieved 90% or above customer satisfaction scores.

Kellie Beirne, CCR’s Chief Executive said: “Switch Together is a great example of how regional collaboration can directly benefit people’s lives, helping households save money at a time when energy costs remain a real concern, while supporting the transition to a greener, more resilient future.

“We’re investing in projects that grow local skills, strengthen our green economy and make climate friendly choices easier for everyone. The success of round one shows how powerful that approach can be and we’re delighted to support the next phase of this hugely positive initiative.”

Whether in the heart of the city or in the most rural corners of the region, homeowners have been able to take advantage of the scheme’s savings, support and clean energy benefits.

Speaking about the power of councils working together to accelerate climate action, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s leader Cllr Jamie Pritchard, CCR’s former climate lead added: “As a former climate lead for CCR, I’ve long believed that regional collaboration is key to making low carbon technologies more accessible for ordinary households and Switch Together proves that.

“By working collectively, we’re reducing barriers, creating skilled local jobs and helping residents make long term savings at a time when every pound matters. This next phase builds on real success and shows what we can achieve when councils and communities move forward together.”

Registration for Switch Together is free, quick and carries no obligation, giving households the chance to explore their options with complete confidence. All installations arranged through the scheme come with insurance backed guarantee, offering long term peace of mind. Residents can register at Switch Together South East Wales

Support is also available for low income or vulnerable households through the Welsh Government’s Nest scheme, which provides free energy efficiency measures including solar panels for those who are eligible.
