A significant milestone has been reached in the long-planned transformation of Cardiff Central Station, with the full business case for the redevelopment now formally approved by all funding partners. The announcement clears the way for construction to begin and marks one of the most important rail infrastructure upgrades in Wales for a generation.
The scheme, led by Transport for Wales (TfW), is backed by up to £140 million of investment from the Department for Transport, the Welsh Government, and the Cardiff Capital Region, which is contributing £40 million to the programme. The redevelopment will modernise Wales’ busiest railway station, easing congestion, improving accessibility, and creating a station capable of supporting long-term passenger growth across the region.
Following a competitive tender process, BAM has been appointed as the design and build contractor ahead of construction works starting next year. Planning approval for the project was secured earlier this year, with the station set to remain open throughout the redevelopment.
The proposed upgrade includes a larger concourse to increase capacity, enhanced ticket gate access to improve passenger flow, better connectivity with other modes of travel, and significantly improved accessibility for those with reduced mobility. Passengers will also benefit from upgraded waiting areas, enhanced retail offerings and new cycle storage facilities.
Alexia Course, Chief Commercial Officer at Transport for Wales, said:
“The approval of the full business case gives us the green light to forge ahead with our plans to deliver much needed enhancements to Cardiff Central station. The investment of up to £140 million means we can deliver improvements to the station to make it fit for a capital city and sustain future growth, providing a better experience for our station customers. Working with our design and build contractor, we can now move forward with the start of construction works next year.”
Cardiff Capital Region’s investment reflects its commitment to supporting critical transport infrastructure that strengthens regional connectivity, boosts economic growth, and enhances the daily experience of thousands of passengers who rely on Cardiff Central as a gateway to the city and the wider region.
The redevelopment represents a major step toward delivering a modern, welcoming and fully accessible station that maintains the heritage of this important landmark while preparing it for the needs of future generations.
